How to make a GAP Insurance claim at Total Loss GAP

Making a GAP Insurance claim means you have gone through a not very nice experience. Either your vehicle has been written off in an accident, flood or fire, or your vehicle as been stolen. The outcome is that your motor insurer has written off the vehicle off as a total loss.

We aim to ensure that the process of making a GAP Insurance claim runs smoothly, and the claims procedure for your particular policy is detailed in your policy documents. However, we have summarised this below for you also.

1. Your motor insurer writes off the vehicle as a total loss

This is an essential part of the process and a trigger for starting your GAP Insurance claim. If the vehicle is replaced, or repaired, and returned to you, then there is no GAP Insurance claim to make. The vehicle must be declared a total loss following a fire, theft, accident or flood.

2. Your motor insurer makes you a market value settlement offer for your vehicle

This is the amount that it will cost you to buy a replacement vehicle that matches the age, mileage, specification and condition of the vehicle at the time it is written off.

KEY POINT - Do not accept the motor insurer's offer before you call the GAP Insurance claims team to lodge your claim. Doing so could slow down your claim processing and/or settlement.

3. Provide your documentation

The claims team will advise you exactly on the documents you will need. This may include:

  • A copy of the V5-C (aka the log book or registration document)
  • A copy of the finance settlement letter (lease, hire purchase, personal contract purchase, etc), if there is one.
  • A copy of the original sales invoice or finance agreement
  • A copy of the insurer's 'write off' settlement letter, plus the market value settlement amount.
  • A crime reference number if the vehicle was stolen or vandalised.

4. Submit your claim

You will be required to complete a form regarding the incident that led to your claim. The claims team will also confirm what documentation and information they will need.

The claim will be processed in accordance with the policy terms and the insurer's process. The claim can be passed to an underwriter to check also.

The claim settlement is confirmed, and payments can be made.

If you still owe some money on your finance or lease, then the finance company will be paid first. Depending on the type of GAP Insurance you have, there may be some further money remaining, and this settlement can be paid to you directly.

FAQs on GAP Insurance claims

How long does a GAP Insurance claim take to process?

We would not expect a GAP Insurance claim to take very long to process; however, all claims can be different. A straightforward claim where you own the vehicle outright, the motor insurer provides all their details in good time, and you have all the relevant documents, can be processed in a matter of days.

When the claim is more complex, if your motor insurer is delaying a decision on your car, or your finance company is slow in providing a settlement letter, the process can take longer.

The claims team will be able to provide you with an update on your progress.

Does Total Loss GAP process your GAP Insurance claim?

No. Total Loss GAP is a brand owned and operated by Aequitas Automotive Ltd. Aequitas Automotive Ltd is an insurance broker, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK, and also a member of the British Insurance Brokers Association.

Aequitas Automotive Ltd will arrange your GAP Insurance policy with one of the insurers we have access to. This insurer will have its own appointed claims handler for your policy. They are authorised to process your claim.

This type of arrangement is typical of all GAP Insurance policies, with few exceptions, whether you buy GAP Insurance from your motor dealer or from an online provider.

Who do I contact if I need to make a GAP Insurance claim on my Total Loss GAP policy?

The details of the insurer and the claims team are on the bottom third of your policy schedule (the document that confirms your details, your policy number, vehicle details etc. The contact details are also on your policy terms and conditions.

If you have any issues finding these details, don't hesitate to contact us at Total Loss GAP, and we will be more than happy to confirm them for you.
